Online TV & video content
The recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa raised the profile of online TV in Britain as office workers up and down the country accessed live content via the BBC website and ITV Live. But how is online TV and video performing in the other Europa countries? New data from TGI Net Europa shows how the technology is developing elsewhere…
Although Britain has the highest number of online TV viewers at 12.7 million (27% of adults), followed by Germany (11.4m / 18%), France (10.4m / 21%) and Spain (9.4m / 24%), France has the highest number of viewers on a mobile device at just over 2 million.
Video share sites are particularly popular in Germany and Spain. In Spain 60% of internet users visited a video share site in the past month (13.6 million), followed by 52% in Germany (20.2 million), 47% in Britain (18.2 million) and 39% in France (15 million).
When it comes to actually watching online video clips, Britain remains some distance ahead. Here 40% of internet users watched clips uploaded by the general public in the past month, compared to 32% in Spain, 24% in Germany and 18% in France.
Perhaps due to the popularity of the BBC website, Britain also has the highest proportion of internet users watching news videos at 32% – compared to only 15% in France.
In Britain the most popular types of online video clips are music videos / concert footage, comedy clips and news videos. The situation is similar in Germany except that news clips are slightly more popular than comedy. In France music videos and concert footage again come out on top, followed by news and entertainment / celebrity news. In Spain full-length films feature in the top three.
